Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented by the Alchemical Wizards (Bk 1 Continued)

This periodic table reference page is brought to you by the Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented By The Alchemical Wizards Book 1. They say, “No Metal – No Magic…and No Technology”. All references below were used to create the book.

The 20 elements represented in this book are: Argon, Boron, Bromine, Caesium, Cerium, Cobalt, Gadolinium, Germanium, Helium, Iridium, Lanthanum, Manganese, Niobium, Phosphorus, Radon, Rhodium, Scandium, Strontium, Tellurium and Thulium.

In this periodic table book, 20 Alchemical Wizards present Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Each wizard wields a magical staff tipped with an element which gives them unique powers.

Areg starts out Book 1 of the Alchemical Wizards by introducing the important  element Argon on his element page.

Thurwin rounds out the Book 1 elements by presenting facts and  other fun information about the metal, Thulium on his element page.

Another elemental favorite is Galoa, who represents Gadolinium. It gives her the power to control and manipulate electromagnetic waves, rendering her a formidable force in the world of technology and communication.

Phova is truly magical, as Phosphorus gives her the ability to manipulate light and create illusions. She can control the intensity, color, and direction of light, allowing her to bend it to her will

The Alchemical Wizards, along with their techno-magical unicorn and dragon friends from the first 2 Magical Elements Books are the perfect group to introduce you to metals and other elements in the Periodic Table.  Hopefully, the Magical Elements of this periodic table book will spark an interest in the magical and real world properties of all the metals and other elements known today.  You may be surprised at how prominently they feature in our every day lives.

Each element page in this book contains terms that might not be completely familiar to the reader.  Refer to the definitions in the back of the book to get a clear understanding of each meaning.

There is also a fun elemental themed Periodic Table at the back of the book.  It features metal horn unicorns, dragons with element tipped tails, wizards and knights with elemental staffs and swords; and radiated goblins.

Mangar has his very own novelette inspired by the real science behind Manganese.

Links and Notes for Mangar’s chemistry inspired magical abilities:

Manganese oxidation states and the green-to-violet color shift (Mangar’s orb)

Mangar’s orb cycling from stable green Mn(II) to a violet-edged, highly oxidizing Mn(VII) state at moments of maximum power — mirrors real manganese chemistry closely. Manganese genuinely has an unusually wide range of oxidation states (+2 through +7), and the permanganate ion (Mn in the +7 state) is famous for both its deep violet-purple color and its strength as an oxidizer.

Manganese “purifying” sulfide contamination (the desulfurization climax)

Mangar’s final act — dissolving sulfide coatings and reversing sulfide contamination in the ley lines — draws directly on manganese’s real industrial role in steelmaking, where it’s added specifically to bind and remove sulfur impurities from molten metal.

Sulfide as a corrosive, weakening agent (the Corroded Ones’ weaponized coating)

The villain’s use of sulfide treatment to make weapons and infrastructure brittle and “corroded” has a real basis in sulfidation corrosion, a well-documented failure mode where sulfur compounds attack and degrade metal.

The Nodule Fields (manganese nodules beneath the Sulfur Flats)

Polymetallic (manganese) nodules are an actual deep-sea phenomenon: rounded mineral accretions of manganese, iron, nickel, and copper that grow around a seed particle over millions of years at millimeter-per-million-year rates, exactly as described in Chapter Eight.

Links and Notes for Scandra’s chemistry inspired magical abilities:

Scandium-aluminum alloys (the skiffs’ hull plating) Real Al-Sc alloys are genuinely prized in aerospace for being lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and unusually strong for their weight — exactly the qualities the story gives the Aetherskiff hulls.

Scandium as element 21 (Scandra’s amulet and general chemistry) General references for the atomic number, properties, and basic facts built around Scandra’s identity.

Scandium ore and geology (the Cinderfen Basin’s “transition metal vein”) Real scandium deposits are strongly associated with volcanic/magmatic geology and often co-occur with titanium and other transition metals — a real-world anchor for the basin’s ore composition.

Transition metals context (scandium, titanium, vanadium, chromium as a “vein”)

Author’s Fantasy License:

Real scandium doesn’t have the electromagnetic-luminescence or elemental-field properties Scandra’s crystals and wand display — that part is invented magic layered on top of a real (rare, lightweight, alloy-strengthening) element.

  • American Chemical Society (C&EN) — Notes that strontium remains irreplaceable in red fireworks and scientists have yet to find a viable substitute: https://cen.acs.org/articles/95/i27/s-fireworks-produces-those-colorful.html

Power Set Three: Bone & Body Alchemy

Strontium ranelate can effectively enhance bone formation while simultaneously decreasing bone breakdown, offering a dual benefit for bone health.

  • EBSCO Research Starters — Overview of strontium’s therapeutic uses including osteoporosis treatment and dental enamel strengthening: https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/complementary-and-alternative-medicine/strontiums-therapeutic-uses
  • Medical News Today — Research showed a 49% reduction in spine fractures in postmenopausal females after a year of strontium ranelate treatment and a 41% decrease in new spine fractures over three years. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/strontium-for-osteoporosis
  • ScienceDirect — Mechanism of Action — Peer-reviewed deep dive into how strontium interacts with bone cells at the molecular level: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352187220300334

  • New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) — Landmark clinical trial on strontium ranelate reducing vertebral fractures: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa022436

Power Set Four: Radioactive Decay Magic

Strontium-90 is considered the most dangerous constituent of nuclear fallout because of its chemical resemblance to calcium — it is assimilated into bones and teeth, where it continues ejecting electrons that cause radiation injury by damaging bone marrow.

  • Britannica — Strontium-90 — Concise scientific entry on Sr-90 as a nuclear fission product and radiation hazard: https://www.britannica.com/science/strontium-90
  • CDC — Radiation Emergencies: Strontium-90 — Once in the body, Sr-90 acts like calcium and is readily incorporated into bones and teeth, where it can cause cancers of the bone, bone marrow, and soft tissues around the bone. https://www.cdc.gov/radiation-emergencies/hcp/isotopes/strontium-90.html
  • NIST — Standardization of Sr-90 — Technical data on Sr-90’s half-life, beta decay, and medical/industrial applications: https://www.nist.gov/pml/radiation-physics/standardization-90sr-srm-4239a
  • Washington State DOH Fact Sheet — Strontium-90 is probably the most dangerous component of radioactive fallout from a nuclear weapon, as radioactive fallout in the form of fine particulate matter can be ingested, bringing beta emitters into the body where they can do much more damage. https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/legacy/Documents/Pubs/320-076_sr90_fs.pdf

Power Set Five: Luminescence & Light Magic

The combination of strontium aluminate and europium results in the longest lasting commonly used photoluminescent phosphorescent material.

  • Chemistry World Podcast — Strontium Aluminate — Beautifully written overview of how strontium aluminate stores and releases light energy, and its emerging use in medical diagnostics: https://www.chemistryworld.com/podcasts/strontium-aluminate/3008606.article

  • NIH/NCBI — Long Persistent HDPE Composites — Academic paper on strontium aluminate’s superiority over older phosphorescent materials in brightness, duration, and chemical stability: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8838302/
  • Glo-Net — Glow in the Dark Guide — As strontium aluminate is exposed to ambient lighting, it absorbs and traps energy at the atomic level; after lights go out, this stored energy is slowly released in the form of visible light, allowing the glow to persist for hours. https://glo-net.com/glow-in-the-dark-with-strontium-aluminate/

Power Set Six: Mineral & Earth Attunement

Strontium is the 15th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, with only two minerals — celestite and strontianite — containing it in sufficient quantities to make recovery practical, found predominantly in sedimentary rocks.

  • Minerals Education Coalition — Strontium — Covers strontium’s geological distribution, mineral sources, and natural reactivity: https://mineralseducationcoalition.org/minerals-database/strontium/
  • NCBI — Toxicological Profile: Production & Geology — The principal strontium minerals of commercial interest are celestite (SrSO₄) and strontianite (SrCO₃), found in sedimentary rocks near gypsum, limestone, dolomite, and sandstone formations. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK602018/
  • GemHeaven — Celestite Mineral Guide — Covers the geological formation, global locations, and spiritual/collector significance of Strauna’s primary reagent mineral: https://gemheaven.org/article/celestite/
