In this periodic table book, 20 Alchemical Wizards present Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Each wizard wields a magical staff tipped with an element which gives them unique powers.
Areg starts out Book 1 of the Alchemical Wizards by introducing the important element Argon on his element page.
Thurwin rounds out the Book 1 elements by presenting facts and other fun information about the metal, Thulium on his element page.
Another elemental favorite is Galoa, who represents Gadolinium. It gives her the power to control and manipulate electromagnetic waves, rendering her a formidable force in the world of technology and communication.
Phova is truly magical, as Phosphorus gives her the ability to manipulate light and create illusions. She can control the intensity, color, and direction of light, allowing her to bend it to her will

The Magic: Cerelia can accelerate or reverse the aging, corrosion, and decay of materials by controlling their oxidative state.
The Real Science: Cerium is unusual among lanthanide elements because it moves easily between two oxidation states, Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺. 3. Light Storage & Truth-Light — Luminescence and Phosphors
The Magic: Cerelia can store ambient or magical light in her cerium garnet pendant and release it later, including a soft golden “truth-light” that makes deception uncomfortable.
The Real Science: Cerium-doped phosphors are genuinely among the most efficient light-converting materials known. Cerium-doped YAG (Ce:YAG) is paired with blue LEDs in most commercial white LED lighting, and cerium is also a key component of phosphors used in older fluorescent lamps and CRT screens. The ability of a Cerium-doped material to absorb energy and re-emit it as visible light is real and well documented. (The specific “truth-revealing” effect in the story is a fictional extension of this real luminescent behavior.)

4. Fire Immunity & Thermal Stabilization — Ceria’s Heat Resistance
The Magic: Cerelia is functionally immune to fire and extreme heat, and can extend temporary heat resistance to objects or people she touches.
The Real Science: Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO₂) has an extremely high melting point — approximately 2,400°C — and is genuinely used as a protective, heat-stabilizing coating in demanding industrial and aerospace applications. Its ability to remain structurally stable under extreme heat is well documented.

5. Catalytic Presence — Catalytic Oxidation
The Magic: Cerelia can accelerate chemical and magical reactions happening near her simply by being present, without being consumed or depleted by the process.
The Real Science: Cerium oxide is one of the most powerful and widely used catalysts in modern industry. It is the active ingredient behind automotive catalytic converters, where its reversible oxygen storage and release lets it accelerate emission-reducing reactions without being permanently altered — the real-world definition of a catalyst.

6. Clarification — Glass Polishing at the Molecular Level
The Magic: Cerelia can dissolve illusions, remove distortion from scrying surfaces, and gently “polish away” confusion or deception in a person’s understanding.
The Real Science: Cerium oxide is the world’s premier glass- and lens-polishing compound, used heavily in the optics industry and in chemical-mechanical planarization for removing microscopic scratches and imperfections. It also chemically decolorizes glass by converting green-tinted iron impurities into a nearly colorless form — a real process of removing visible flaws at a chemical level. (The extension of this into clarifying a confused mind is a fictional metaphor built on that real property.)

7. Prepared Power — The Real Difficulty of Rare Earth Processing
The Magic: Cerelia cannot improvise her magic in a crisis. Every significant working requires cerium compounds she has already, laboriously, isolated and purified in advance.
The Real Science: Rare earth elements as a group are notoriously difficult to separate from one another industrially because they are chemically so similar, and this is reflected in the real-world supply chain, where a small number of countries dominate processing. Cerium itself, however, is something of an exception — its stable Ce⁴⁺ state in solution actually makes it comparatively easier to separate from its lanthanide neighbors than most other rare earths, though the overall extraction and refining process remains industrially demanding.

Author’s Fantasy LIcense
Every power above is rooted in a real, documented property of cerium or cerium compounds. However, the story takes real chemistry only as a starting point and then imagines well beyond it. The following elements have no basis in real science and are invented entirely for the story:
- The specific magical effects themselves — igniting stone or enchanted metal with a touch, “truth-light” that makes lying physically uncomfortable, dissolving illusions, or temporarily transferring heat immunity to another person — are fictional extensions of real chemical properties, not real phenomena.
- The Ember Familiar (a fire sprite) and Sylphrenna (a lightning-charged storm-fox spirit) are entirely fictional magical creatures.
- Ley-gate teleportation, Isolde’s river-warded fast travel, and Fenwick’s fully autonomous steam-powered mechanical raptor are fictional technologies and magic systems.
- The world of MarBryn itself, its single moon and the “Moon-Star,” the city and location names (Hollowmere Vale, Emberhold Spire, Kaelport, the Sunken Foundry, Glassmere Lake, the Obsidian Wastes, Ashenmoor Citadel), and the “no metal, no magic” philosophy are all invented worldbuilding.
- The villain’s “Cascade Array” — a device that stores and weaponizes harvested oxidative energy to age metal across an entire region in an instant — has no real-world counterpart and is a dramatized, fictional escalation of real oxidation chemistry.

Author’s Fantasy License:
Hetha’s crystal is solid helium but real solid helium needs enormous pressure and cryogenic cold so her crystal would not remain solid at higher temperatures. Regarding the “molecular displacement” climax in Chapter 9: real helium is prized precisely because it doesn’t bond or interact with much of anything (that’s what the noble-gas source links above explain), so using it to physically shove reactive compound molecules out of a crystal lattice by brute density is a fun magic-system extrapolation rather than something with a direct real-world mechanism.
