Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented by the Alchemical Wizards (Bk 2 Continued)
Alchemical Wizards Make Science Magical
In this periodic table book, 21 Alchemical Wizards present Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Each wizard wields a magical staff tipped with an element which gives them unique powers. They say, “No Metal – No Magic…and No Technology”. All references below were used to create the book.

Arkyn starts out Book 2 of the Alchemical Wizards by introducing the important element Arsenic on his element page.
Thanelen rounds out the Book 2 elements by presenting facts and other fun information about the metal, Thalium on his element page.
Another elemental favorite is Berwyn, who represents Beryllium. Her power enables her to control and manipulate the bonds between atoms, granting her dominion over the strength and lightness of matter.
Samarinda is truly magical, as Samarium gives her the ability to manipulate, strengthen, or weaken magnetic fields, and by doing so, she can control objects and forces that are influenced by magnets. This enables her to move metallic objects at will, shape magnetic fields into protective barriers, or even generate magnetic pulses to disrupt electronic devices.
The Alchemical Wizards, along with their techno-magical unicorn and dragon friends from the first 2 Magical Elements Books are the perfect group to introduce you to metals and other elements in the Periodic Table. Hopefully, the Magical Elements of this periodic table book will spark an interest in the magical and real world properties of all the metals and other elements known today. You may be surprised at how prominently they feature in our every day lives. It’s true what the wizards say, “No Metal – No Magic…and No Technology”.

Links and Notes for Praethec’s chemistry inspired magical abilities:
1. Teleportation and Space-Folding
The Magic: Praethec compresses the space between two locations and steps through the fold instead of walking or flying.
The Real Science: This is based on the lanthanide contraction, a real phenomenon where lanthanide atoms (including praseodymium) are smaller than expected because their outer electrons are pulled unusually close to the nucleus, packing more structure into less space than their size suggests.

2. Compressed Storage (Ring of Catalytic Memory, Amber Pendants)
The Magic: Praethec stores ninety-nine alchemical formulae in a single ring, and catastrophic alchemical potential inside tiny amber vials.
The Real Science: Drawn from the same lanthanide contraction principle above — the idea that lanthanide elements pack more density and structure into less volume than expected.

3. Catalytic Shielding
The Magic: Praethec’s defensive magic does not block attacks outright — it converts and redirects their energy into something harmless.
The Real Science: Based on the real chemical definition of a catalyst: a substance that speeds up or enables a reaction without itself being consumed or permanently changed by it.

- Chemistry LibreTexts — Catalysts (https://chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Inorganic_Chemistry/Supplemental_Modules_and_Websites_(Inorganic_Chemistry)/Catalysis/Catalysts)
4. Magnetic Manipulation and Polarity Reversal
The Magic: Praethec can seize metal weapons out of the air, and in the climactic battle, reverse a construct’s magnetic polarity so its own limbs repel each other.
The Real Science: Praseodymium has real magnetic properties and is genuinely used, often alongside neodymium, in some of the strongest permanent magnets made today.

- Royal Society of Chemistry — Praseodymium, Element 59 (https://periodic-table.rsc.org/element/59/praseodymium)
5. The Monocle of Elemental Sight and Viridian Revelation Light
The Magic: Praethec’s green light pierces illusions, reveals hidden truths, and exposes a material’s true elemental composition.
The Real Science: Based on didymium glass, a real glass made partly from praseodymium (and neodymium) that filters very specific wavelengths of light, which is why it is genuinely used in glassblowing safety eyewear and specialty optics.

6. Heat Immunity and Thermal Energy Storage
The Magic: Praethec is nearly immune to fire, and can absorb heat and magical energy over time before releasing it all at once in a single concentrated burst.
The Real Science: Praseodymium has a genuinely high melting point of about 931°C (1,708°F), unusually resilient for what otherwise behaves like a soft metal.

7. The Climactic Unmaking Spell (Reactivity With Water and Acids)
The Magic: In the final confrontation, Praethec unravels the villain’s Null Ore by reaching into its structure the way his element reacts with water, converting instability into something inert.
The Real Science: Praseodymium metal genuinely reacts with water (faster when the water is hot) and dissolves readily in dilute acids, both real and well-documented reactions.

8. The Iconic Green Glow
The Magic: Praethec’s staff, flames, and magical light are consistently a deep, vivid green throughout the book.
The Real Science: Praseodymium compounds, such as praseodymium(III) oxide, produce genuinely vivid green colors, which is part of why the element’s name comes from the Greek words for “green” and “twin.”

9. Cindrix’s Fire Breath
The Magic: Cindrix can breathe jets of pale flame and is instinctively drawn to Praethec’s staff.
The Real Science: This is based on real pyrophoricity. White phosphorus genuinely ignites spontaneously on contact with open air, and praseodymium metal shares that same real tendency in finely divided form, which is the in-story reason the two are drawn to each other as chemical “kin.”

10. Ally Enhancement and Alloy Fortification
The Magic: Praethec can temporarily reinforce weapons, armor, or an ally’s natural abilities without changing what they fundamentally are.
The Real Science: Praseodymium is genuinely used to strengthen magnesium and aluminum alloys, making them harder and more heat-resistant than they would be alone.

Author’s Fantasy License
While every power above is rooted in a real, documented property of praseodymium or a closely related element, the story adds a great deal that is entirely invented and should not be mistaken for science. In particular:
- Literal teleportation and instant space-folding are fictional extrapolations of the lanthanide contraction. Real praseodymium does not allow travel, compression of physical space, or storage of objects inside jewelry.
- All named magical items — the Staff of Viridian Unmaking, the Monocle of Elemental Sight, the Ring of Catalytic Memory, the Scroll of Elemental Indices, and the Everflame Candle — are invented objects with no real-world counterpart.
- The Null Ore, Malvorn’s constructs, and the ability to “unmake” metal on command or starve on broken metallic bonds are entirely fictional; no real substance works this way.
- All characters — Praethec, Ophira, Thaddeus, Azurine, Cindrix, and Malvorn — along with the world of MarBryn, the Hollow Crucible, the Cobalt Gorge, the Ferrovane, and the Moon-Star, are fictional creations with no basis in real geography or astronomy.
- Praethec’s four-hundred-plus-year lifespan, instant wound-fortification spells, and his ability to physically survive volatile magical combat are fictional and not based on any real property of praseodymium.
- “No Metal, No Magic” and “equivalent exchange” are fictional philosophical and ethical frameworks invented for the story’s world, not recognized scientific laws, though equivalent exchange loosely echoes the real law of conservation of mass, which states that matter is never created or destroyed, only converted.

Links and Notes for Samarinda’s chemistry inspired magical abilities:
Power-by-Power Source List
1. Rare Sight
Real basis: Samarium belongs to the lanthanides, a group of elements so chemically alike — nearly identical ionic size, the same common +3 charge, and a steady “lanthanide contraction” across the series — that separating one from another is genuinely difficult, even though they are not scarce in the Earth’s crust. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s power to spot the one false or hidden thing among many similar ones.
• Science Notes — “Rare Earth Elements” (why lanthanides are hard to separate)
• Jefferson Lab — It’s Elemental: Samarium (monazite source, lanthanide classification)
2. The Permanent
Real basis: Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) magnets are real, extremely strong permanent magnets that resist demagnetization and keep working at high temperatures far better than most other magnet types. Jefferson Lab’s own summary states that SmCo5 magnets “resist demagnetization better than any known material.” In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s ability to form bonds and enchantments that hold permanently, even under extreme stress.
• Jefferson Lab — It’s Elemental: Samarium (SmCo5 demagnetization resistance)
• Stanford Magnets — The Superior Temperature Stability of SmCo Magnets
3. The Seeking Cure
Real basis: Samarium-153 lexidronam (brand name Quadramet) is a real, FDA-approved radiopharmaceutical. It is bone-seeking: it concentrates at sites of high bone turnover, such as cancerous bone lesions, at roughly five times the level found in healthy bone, and its radiation travels only a few millimeters, so the dose stays close to the targeted tissue. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s power to seek out and dismantle the exact source of a curse or illness without harming anything healthy nearby.
• Drugs.com — Quadramet (samarium Sm-153 lexidronam) Prescribing Information
• National Cancer Institute — Dictionary of Cancer Terms: samarium Sm 153 lexidronam pentasodium
Note: The real drug label itself notes that the precise mechanism by which it relieves bone pain is not fully known — the bone-seeking and localized-radiation behavior is well established, but the full pain-relief mechanism is still a topic of ongoing research.
4. The Dampening
Real basis: Samarium-149 is a genuine, powerful neutron absorber in nuclear reactor physics. Reactor engineers call it a “reactor poison” because it soaks up neutrons that would otherwise continue a chain reaction, acting as a natural brake on reactor power. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s ability to absorb and safely disperse runaway magical energy before it can cascade out of control.
• IAEA / ANSN — TRIGA Reactors (Safety and Technology): Samarium as a fission-product reactor poison
5. The Lens Arts
Real basis: Samarium has genuine optical and laser applications. Samarium oxide is added to glass to absorb infrared radiation, and samarium-doped glass and optical fiber have been used to build real lasers, including a demonstrated red (651 nm) fiber laser with unusually narrow, precise emission and absorption lines. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s power to filter out illusions and focus magical energy into a precise beam.
• Jefferson Lab — It’s Elemental: Samarium (infrared-absorbing glass)
• University of Southampton ePrints — Samarium3+-doped glass laser operating at 651 nm
6. The Long Burn
Real basis: Samarium has a genuinely high melting point (about 1,072°C) and reacts only slowly with air, tarnishing over time rather than corroding quickly. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s magical endurance — reserves that deplete slowly — and a defense that grows more resistant the more she is attacked.
• PeriodicTable.com — Samarium: physical and chemical data (melting point)
• WebElements — Samarium: reactions of the element (tarnishing / reaction with air)
Note: The idea that Samarium’s tarnish layer actively “protects” the metal and makes it progressively harder to damage further is a storytelling extrapolation. The confirmed real fact is simply that samarium tarnishes slowly in air rather than reacting quickly; the self-reinforcing “adaptive defense” framing is fictional.
7. The Memory of Light
Real basis: Samarium compounds show real photoluminescence — they can absorb light energy and re-emit it at a different, visible wavelength, which is also the basic principle behind samarium-doped lasers. In the story, this becomes Samarinda’s rare ability to absorb knowledge and later release it again in a compressed, glowing form.
Note: The specific idea of “storing knowledge” and transmitting it to another person as light is entirely fictional. The real, confirmed science is limited to samarium’s light-absorbing and light-emitting (photoluminescent) behavior, not the storage or transfer of information.
Author’s Fantasy License
Everything below has no basis in real Samarium chemistry or physics. It was invented for the story and should not be treated as science fact:
- Samarinda herself, the Alchemical Cat, Thaddeus, Perrin, Isolde, Orynthiel, and Thallonrend are entirely fictional characters, as is the world of MarBryn, its single moon, and the “Moon-Star.”
- The philosophy “No Metal, No Magic” is a fictional worldview invented for this series, not a real scientific or historical principle.
- The exact named powers — Rare Sight, the Permanent, the Seeking Cure, the Dampening, the Lens Arts, the Long Burn, and the Memory of Light — are fictional abilities. Real Samarium does not grant magic; the story uses its genuine properties only as creative inspiration.
- Thallonrend’s reactor-temple, his plan to trigger a magical “Ascension” cascade, and the stripped failsafes across MarBryn are entirely invented plot devices, not descriptions of how any real reactor or chemical process works.
- The companions’ methods of fast travel — Thaddeus’s Cindercart, Perrin’s magnetic field-line jumping, Orynthiel’s moonlight folding, and Isolde’s phase-step boots — are all fictional technology and magic with no real-world basis, even where they are loosely inspired by real magnetism or kinetic-energy concepts.
- Samarinda’s ability to perceive “frequency mismatches” in disguised people or forged documents, and to physically absorb and later release large bursts of magical energy through her body, are fictional extensions of the real science described above, not literal real-world effects.

Geological Scarcity — Why Selenium Magic Is Rare & Irreplicable
Britannica — Selenium https://www.britannica.com/science/selenium Confirms selenium composes only approximately 90 parts per billion of Earth’s crust and is almost always found as a byproduct of copper refining rather than in independent deposits, directly supporting the story’s worldbuilding around selenium’s rarity.
USGS — Selenium (Critical Mineral Resources of the United States) https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp1802Q The authoritative U.S. Geological Survey scientific report on selenium as a critical and scarce mineral resource, recovered almost entirely as a copper refining byproduct. The definitive government source for selenium’s geological scarcity.
Earth Magazine — Mineral Resource of the Month: Selenium https://www.earthmagazine.org/article/mineral-resource-month-selenium/ USGS-sourced article confirming selenium is too dispersed in the crust to justify mining independently — it must be extracted as a byproduct. Supports the story’s argument that selenium magic is nearly impossible to replicate because the raw material is so hard to source.
WebElements — Selenium Geological Information https://www.webelements.com/selenium/geology.html Concise periodic table reference confirming selenium minerals are rare and the element is normally only extractable as a copper byproduct, reinforcing the scarcity of Selenice’s specific magic.

Links and Notes for Terlin’s chemistry inspired magical abilities:
1. Luminescent Revelation — Terlin’s power to make hidden things glow and reveal the truth
The Magic: By channeling light through the terbium crystal on his staff, Terlin exposes invisible ink, concealed doorways, disguised creatures, and even lies, all of which fluoresce a telltale color when touched by his magic.
The Real Science: Terbium compounds are famous for emitting a vivid, reliable green glow when exposed to ultraviolet light — a property called fluorescence. This effect is bright, consistent, and hard to fake, which is exactly why rare-earth phosphors like terbium are used in fluorescent lighting, display screens, and glow-based security and anti-counterfeiting applications.

→ Terbium (Wikipedia overview, including fluorescence and phosphor applications)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terbium
2. Matter-Shaping and Telekinetic Precision — Terlin’s power to reshape metal and stone through resonance, not force
The Magic: Terlin can “persuade” metal and stone into new forms by channeling terbium energy through his staff, and exert fine, precise control over small metallic and mineral objects.
The Real Science: Terbium is a key ingredient in Terfenol-D, an alloy famous for giant magnetostriction — physically changing shape with real force and precision when placed in a magnetic field. This genuine effect converts magnetic energy directly into mechanical movement and is used in real-world sonar transducers and precision actuators.

https://www.machinedesign.com/news/article/21814578/precision-moves-with-magnetostriction
3. “Oxidizing Mode” and “Reducing Mode” — Terlin’s catalytic, adaptive magic
The Magic: Depending on what a situation requires, Terlin can either absorb and neutralize chaotic or corrupted magical energy, or donate stabilizing energy to reinforce something weakened — choosing whichever approach a moment calls for.
The Real Science: Most lanthanide elements are chemically “stuck” holding one fixed electrical charge (oxidation state). Terbium is unusual: it can shift between two stable oxidation states, Tb³⁺ and Tb⁴⁺, letting it accept or donate electrons depending on the surrounding chemistry — a real property that makes it useful as a catalyst.
Sources:
→ Terbium Compounds (Wikipedia — covers Tb³⁺ / Tb⁴⁺ oxidation states)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terbium_compounds
4. Ferromagnetic Fury — Terlin’s rare, emotion-triggered surge of power
The Magic: Under normal circumstances this facet of Terlin’s magic lies completely dormant. But during extreme emotional states — grief, fury, or overwhelming wonder — a sudden surge activates, making him temporarily far more powerful and pulling metallic objects violently toward or away from him.
The Real Science: Terbium is one of only a handful of elements that become ferromagnetic — a true, powerful magnet — but only under specific conditions: in terbium’s case, at very low temperatures, below roughly −54°C (219 K). Above that threshold, the effect simply isn’t present. The story reimagines that real “only under the right conditions” trigger as an emotional one instead of a thermal one.

5. Containment — Terlin’s power to safely absorb runaway magical energy
The Magic: Terlin can “drink” wild, escalating magical energy out of the air — or even out of a wound — planting his staff and containing a dangerous chain reaction before it can spread or explode.
The Real Science: Terbium has a high neutron-absorption cross-section, meaning it is genuinely effective at capturing neutrons, the particles that sustain nuclear chain reactions. Terbium-bearing materials (often combined with dysprosium) are used in real nuclear reactor control rods, where their job is to absorb excess neutron flux and keep a reaction safely under control rather than letting it run away.
Sources:
https://patents.google.com/patent/US10650930
6. A Finite Reservoir — the real cost and limitation of Terlin’s magic
The Magic: Terlin’s magic is not freely renewable. Major workings exhaust him meaningfully, and recovery requires real rest and access to terbium-bearing minerals — which is why he is constantly collecting ore samples and studying geology wherever he travels.
The Real Science: Despite the common label “rare earth,” most lanthanides are not actually scarce in the Earth’s crust — but terbium genuinely is among the less abundant of them, and separating it from mixed mineral ores is a slow, specialized, resource-intensive process, which keeps global supply limited.

The science above is real and verifiable. Everything below it is invented for the story and has no basis in real chemistry or physics:
- Terlin, Dorian, Corvindel, Elowen, Malkorath, and every other character in the book are fictional, as is the world of MarBryn itself.
- No real element grants a person magical abilities. Terbium does not let anyone reveal invisible creatures, detect lies, reshape stone with their mind, absorb “magical” energy, or extend a human lifespan to 147 years — these are all imaginative extensions of real properties, not real effects.
- Terbium’s real ferromagnetism only appears at extremely cold temperatures (below about −54°C), not in response to emotion. The story reimagines the trigger condition for dramatic effect; the underlying “only under specific conditions” idea is the only part borrowed from real science.
- The in-world philosophy “No metal, no magic,” the planet MarBryn, its one moon, and the “Moon-Star” are entirely invented worldbuilding with no real-world scientific claim attached to them.
- Dorian’s Voltstriders, Corvindel’s teleportation (“verdigris flicker”), and Elowen’s full-body liquefaction (“gallium glide”) are fictional abilities loosely inspired by real properties of magnetism, copper patina, and gallium’s low melting point, respectively — none of these real materials actually enable teleportation, liquefying a human body, or magnetic flight.
