Along the way they pick up a brilliant young field chemist, a lightning-fast warrior elf, and a small silicate life-form who has been quietly mapping ancient pre-civilization technology for seventy years and has opinions about everything. There are battles, explosions of elemental energy, a major heist at a villain’s cave lair, characters who get badly hurt and keep going anyway, and — yes — multiple scenes where someone makes a very good cup of tea at a dramatically appropriate moment.
